December 2022 Updates & ASB News

This article was last modified on December 1st, 2022.

From the Desk of Dr. Esposito

Dear ICA Families,

In his 1926 classic, “Winnie the Pooh,” A. A. Milne wrote, “Piglet noticed that even though he had a very small heart, it could hold a rather large amount of gratitude.” Our little pink friend was grateful for the abundance he had in his life; great friends, a warm place to sleep and a few tasty “haycorns” to eat. As we conclude 2022, and break for the winter holiday, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to all who help make Independence Charter Academy an amazing place to be. We are a learning community with many gifts and talents..

From the online classroom, to our living room and all points in-between, our collective efforts to raise the whole child are filled with passion, commitment and a willingness to make decisions that may be hard in the present, but will have a positive and lasting influence in the future for all.

Parents, of course, are such a critical part of all we hope to accomplish on behalf of our Independence Charter Academy students. I am grateful to you for masterfully doing what I know firsthand is the hardest, most rewarding and joyous job of all. Thank you for entrusting us with your most precious gift. I am grateful to our wonderful, talented, creative, inquisitive, optimistic, resourceful and resilient students.   In the spirit of this holiday season, I want to extend my thanks to all of you for everything that you do for our school. As we enjoy the upcoming holidays, it is my fervent wish that each of you receives and returns the seasonal bounty of blessings and good tidings that make these days truly special. It is also during this time that I am reminded of my own good fortune to serve as the proud Principal of Independence Charter Academy. Indeed, my career as a public school educator has afforded me vast, varied and richly rewarding opportunities to teach and to learn from young people. Of course, I believe the faces of our children best express the true meaning of this holiday season. They radiate a sense of unbridled enthusiasm, untainted hope and unabashed joy for life and the opportunities that await them.

Please have a safe and joyous holiday season.

Respectfully,
Dr. Esposito

The end of Semester 1 or the first half of school year 2022-23 is on December 15, 2023. All work must be submitted by that date! Failure to do so will result in an ‘F’ grade which will make it necessary to retake the entire course to receive credit towards graduation.

Do not allow this date to pass without all work being completed!

The State of California recently made it mandatory for a FAFSA to be completed by each graduating senior in the state of California.

FAFSA is an acronym with the full name being Free Application for Federal Student Aid. This is the avenue whereby students secure financial aid for post secondary education schools. The FAFSA form must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. Central time (CT) on June 30, 2023. Any corrections or updates must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. CT on Sept. 9, 2023.

Even though you may not graduate in 2023; it is to your advantage to familiarize yourself with the FAFSA process at CSAC.ca.gov/AllIn.

If you have questions or concerns,  simply contact me at bcrist@helendalesd.com or call me at 760-515-3933.  I will be more than happy to assist you!

Upcoming JROTC Events

December 3rd our Troop will march and display our national colors in the Silverlakes Christmas Parade.

On December 10th our Troop Color Guard will present colors at the Bakersfield Hockey team’s  game  ( Bakersfield CONDORS) at the Mechanics Bank Arena, Theater and Convention Center in Bakersfield.

This year we continue to reflect on our freedoms and our way of life as we try to come closer together as people of a great and wonderful nation.

We at Helendale School District are proud of the dedication and sense of duty that our Cadets continue to demonstrate in the face of academic and social challenges.

Among the JROTC’s primary goals is to provide Leadership and Citizenship instruction and skills to our cadets in hopes of continuing to build a cohesive unit that will participate in serving our community as they grow into patriotic, positive, and productive citizens.

We know how important it is for our students to interact and develop positive social skills and a sense of community and responsibility. We strive to help our Cadets understand and appreciate the importance of a value system that incorporates good morals, belief in oneself, community, and respect for our country and each other.

JROTC counts as an elective and or CTE credits and offers students scholarships and educational opportunities.  We are looking forward to increasing our membership and getting more students involved. We are currently working on expanding our JROTC program to include other schools within the district. More information is forthcoming.

On behalf of the JROTC Cadets and ICA staff, please take care of yourselves and your families.
